LINES IN MOTION
150 years of drawing
9 February – 1 June
The entire museum facility at the Lillehammer Art Museum is
dedicated to the art of drawing this spring 2008. The main exhibition features
a historical perspective with sketches ranging in style from romantic
nationalism to more contemporary, independent forms of expression. The various artistic
styles are diverse, such as Gude’s sketches, Werenskiold and Kittelsen’s
illustrations, Munch’s drawings in pencil, cartoons and children’s book
illustrations, as well as modern styles represented by artists such as Bjørn
Ransve, Olav Christopher Jenssen, Vanessa Baird, Tiril Schrøder and Sverre
Mallin. In addition to Norwegian drawings, works by Finnish and Swedish artists
will also be on display. Tove Jansson’s Mummitroll and Illon Wikland’s Ronja
Røverdatter are presented together with young contemporary artists such as
Jockum Nordström and Pirjetta Brander.

PABLO PICASSO
Tales and fables
8 March – 13 April
Picasso was troll-binding as a graphic artist, and in the
spring 2008 we have the honour of exhibiting an impressive selection of his
graphic artworks. Throughout his entire life, Picasso devoted time to producing
graphic art, and he experimented his way to a sublime mastery of the various techniques.
Graphic art for him became a sanctuary for spontaneous impulses, aesthetic
reflection and day-to-day life, and self-biographical elements would come to
play an increasingly important role in his works. Most of the works shown in
the exhibition were created by Picasso in connection with his work on two
series: Suite Vollard from the 1930s and Suite 347 from the 1960s.
The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design and senior
curator Nils Messel are responsible for this nation-wide tour that will display
40 works in all. The National Museum has more than 505 sheets of graphic artwork
by Picasso, of which the majority were donated by a single Norwegian collector,
Mr. Arild Wahlstrøm. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to see Picasso’s
graphic art – the last time a selection from the Picasso collection was on tour
was 10 years ago!

EDVARD MUNCH
Expressionism
Wood engraving
14 June – 5
October
Edvard Munch is
undoubtedly one of the world’s leading graphic artists. The exhibition
”Edvard
Munch – Expressionism” is a presentation of a unique and personal
collection of
Munch’s wood engravings. This is the first time the collection is on
display in
its entirety, and features several central themes in Munch’s body of
work, such
as Angst, Melancholy, Forest bound
and Moonlight. Munch has had a
tremendous influence on German artists, particularly in the first
decade of the
20th century. The exhibition shows Munch’s influence on other artists
by
displaying artwork by the German expressionists Pechstein, Kirchner,
Heckel and
Nolde.

GUNNAR TORVUND
Sculpture
18
October – 4 January
2009
Autumn 2008
the sculptor Gunnar Torvund (1948) will present a new piece at the Lillehammer Art Museum. Mr. Torvund belongs
to the generation
of artists active in the 1970s who broke with the classical sculpture
traditions
that had long dominated in Norway.
Mr. Torvund simplifies shapes and sculpts using a wide range of
materials, such
as classical marble, plastic, wood and metal. Surfaces and a range of
contrasting
materials are central to his artistic style. Gunnar Torvund has also
contributed to renewing Norwegian religious art.
